Investigators said one of the suspects, identified as Marcus Giddings, 42, of Trenton, allegedly ripped the cash register from the counter before both suspects fled the store on bicycles.

Police estimate approximately $1,047 worth of cigarettes, a cash register valued at approximately $300, and approximately $472 in cash were stolen. Additional damage to cigarette packs, displays, shelves and drawers was estimated at approximately $3,820.

Responding officers spotted a male matching the description near Newkirk Avenue and Watson Avenue.

Officer Connor Kasa ordered the man to stop, but police said he abandoned his bicycle and attempted to flee on foot.

During the pursuit, investigators said the suspect broke through a fence and entered a residential property. Officer Kasa reportedly observed the suspect throw a black trash bag while running.

Officers eventually caught up with the man in a backyard on Newkirk Avenue and placed him under arrest without further incident.

Police said the discarded bag contained cigarettes believed to have been stolen from QuickChek. A search of Giddings allegedly also uncovered suspected crack cocaine and a suspected crack pipe.
