🚨 DRIVER CHARGED AFTER ALLEGEDLY ENTERING CLOSED WORK ZONE AND NEARLY STRIKING POLICE OFFICER, WORKERS 🚔
Police arrested a Williamstown man after he allegedly drove through a closed construction zone in Gloucester Township, nearly hitting a police officer and several workers. Matthew Senkier faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and eluding.
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Williamstown man is facing multiple criminal charges after police say he drove through a closed construction zone on Evesham Road, nearly striking a police officer and several construction workers.
The incident happened on August 12, 2026, while Gloucester Township Police officers were assigned to the active work zone.
According to police, an officer was stationed at the roadway closure when a nearby business employee began shouting profanities at him and demanding that he leave.
Police said the individual later entered a vehicle, drove around the closure and proceeded through the active construction area. The driver allegedly accelerated toward construction workers before stopping when the roadway became impassable.
The driver then reportedly reversed, nearly striking the police officer, before refusing repeated commands to exit the vehicle. Police said the driver accelerated through the work zone again while fleeing, narrowly missing multiple people before cutting through a business parking lot and continuing onto a residential street.
Construction workers reportedly ran toward the officer after the vehicle fled, fearing that he had been struck. Fortunately, police confirmed that no injuries were reported.
Investigators quickly identified the driver as 40-year-old Matthew Senkier of Williamstown. He was later located and taken into custody.
Senkier was charged with:
🔴 Eluding 🔴 Obstruction 🔴 Resisting Arrest 🔴 Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
He was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.
🚧 Police emphasized that active roadway work zones pose significant dangers to officers, construction workers, roadway crews and motorists. Officials warned that intentionally ignoring a roadway closure can put lives at serious risk and may result in criminal charges and enhanced motor vehicle penalties.
