After days of searching, officials announced Friday evening that the body of the 10-year-old girl who was swept away in the Passaic River has been recovered. Emergency crews from multiple agencies spent days searching the river using boats, helicopters, divers, and sonar equipment as the operation shifted from a rescue effort to a recovery mission. Officials say the girl, along with a 10-year-old boy and his 11-year-old sister, entered the river near a boat ramp in Garfield earlier this week. The boy’s body was recovered Wednesday night, while his sister was able to escape the water and is recovering with family. The recovery was made possible after a couple watching the river from their apartment spotted what appeared to be a child in the water and immediately alerted authorities. Officials praised the couple for taking action, calling them heroes. Authorities said heavy rainfall earlier in the week caused dangerous river conditions, with strong currents and high water levels complicating rescue efforts. Crews from Garfield, Passaic, and surrounding communities joined together throughout the search, with officials emphasizing the importance of water safety and reminding the public that rivers can be extremely dangerous even when the surface appears calm.
