NEWARK, NJ — August 16, 2026 — One person is dead and two others were injured following an apparent attempted murder-suicide at a Newark apartment building Sunday morning, authorities said.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that a fatal shooting occurred in the 700 block of Bergen Street.
According to authorities, one person died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while two other individuals suffered gunshot injuries and were transported to area hospitals. Their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.
🚔 Police, including officers in tactical gear, responded to the apartment complex at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Residents reported that an armed individual had allegedly barricaded themselves inside a third-floor apartment and refused to come out for several hours. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
The investigation remains active, and officials have not immediately released the identities of those involved or a possible motive.
